The original Erna Fergusson Branch Library on this site contained 7,000 gross square feet. The replacement facility required more than twice that amount of space on the same, tight site. Parking is shared with the Palo Duro Senior Citizens Center to the east and with other functions in Montgomery Park. A seldom used parking area was located across the Hahn Arroyo to the north. The functions include adult collections and reading; children’s collections, program area, and seating; Talking Books (program of books on tape for the blind), public access computers, lounge seating, administrative area, and a community meeting room. The meeting room and restrooms need to be available when the library is closed. Other functions included the delivery dock and an outdoor area near the children’s area for outdoor programs. The total construction cost was $2,457,684 or $161.40 /square foot.
